Built Around the Plants
We Actually Collect.
The Pioneer Nursery is a family-run collector nursery where rare cactus, live selling, practical plant care, and the stories behind exceptional plants all come together.
More Than an Online Plant Shop
We built The Pioneer Nursery around the plants that make us stop, look twice, and want to know more: unusual Gymnocalycium, sculptural Astrophytum, slow-growing Ariocarpus, Adenium and caudex plants, and other collector material with real character.
What began as a love of interesting plants has grown into a nursery that sells online, hosts live plant shows, works with growers, documents noteworthy clones, and creates practical care resources for the people who take our plants home.
We want buying a plant from Pioneer to feel like the beginning of the experience—not the end of it.

Four Parts of the Nursery
The website reflects the way we actually work: finding interesting plants, helping customers grow them, documenting collector material, and bringing the nursery community together live.

Plants Worth Stopping For
We gravitate toward color, structure, unusual forms, interesting genetics, and plants with a story behind them.
Care After the Sale
Our growing care library is designed around what customers actually need after a plant arrives—not generic filler.
Documented Clones
The Gymno Clone Archive preserves names, morphology, provenance, breeder information, and distinctive collector material.
Live Community
Our nursery lives through shows, games, tours, streams, special events, and the collectors who join us week after week.
Built Through Relationships
At Home
Our Southern California nursery is where plants are received, grown, photographed, listed, packed, shipped, streamed, and cared for. It is also where many of the questions that become our Care Guides begin.
With Growers
We also build relationships with growers and nurseries abroad, including in Thailand, where extraordinary cactus breeding and collector culture give us opportunities to discover unusual plants, meet the people behind them, and bring those stories to our live community.
Inside the Gymno Clone Archive
Some plants deserve more than a product listing. The archive gives notable Gymnocalycium clones a permanent record and gives collectors a place to explore named material over time.

Many customers first return to our website after scanning the QR code included with their order. That is intentional. We want you to know what to do when the box opens, when to water, how to acclimate light, what normal shipping stress looks like, and where to look when something seems wrong.
Start With Arrival Care
New plant arrival, bare-root re-rooting, first watering, light acclimation, shipping stress, and troubleshooting give new plants a better start.
Keep Learning
Species care, soil, pests, hydrotherapy, seeds and seedlings, Adenium, Gymnocalycium, Astrophytum, Ariocarpus, and more continue building the library beyond day one.
